Rural Barn Garden Transformation

The owners of this stunning barn conversion in the heart of a tiny village were having their garden transformed by a renowned local garden designer, who brought me in to help with the lighting. The brief was to subtly illuminate the front of the property in a way which was practical and inviting and showed guests where to come (they were always pitching up at the wrong door) without upsetting the neighbours or creating a lighting scheme which was inappropriate for a dark, rural village.

At the back of the house, an entertaining space was created which needed lighting which would add a touch of glamour to summer barbecues whilst also allowing guests to see what they were eating.  This area is also viewed from large glazed sections of the barn’s interior so needed to provide an attractive subtly lit view year round.

The garden and rear of the property are viewed from a summerhouse on its boundary so it was also important to make it look pretty from this angle.  Steps and paths were lit to provide practical light in a way which also enhances the textures of brick and stone and adds interest through texture and the interplay between light and shadow.
